Chapter Eight

A

fter defeating the army of goblins and killing their leader, Leon's experience had skyrocketed. Not only did he gain additional attributes, but he also acquired another skill. Still, despite this, he was nervous. Sitting atop his unmade bed, with the sheets toppled over the floor, he was stroking his chin while sweat was driveling down the sides of his face. Clenched in between both his index finger and thumb, a graceful letter rested.

A few days had passed since his little fiasco with the corrupted goblin. Immediately following their victory, Seb sent a letter back to the courts by using the fastest message bird that they had on hand, so it was only natural that they received a swift reply. Nevertheless, the longer he waited, the more apprehensive he became. There was no telling what King Frederick would do, especially since he was supposedly invited to the upcoming party.

Still, it wasn't as though Leon and his men had done nothing since. In hopes of pleasing the higher echelon, he had sent men out to every other peak, quickly taking them over with their superior numbers. Since Danny was no longer in the picture, their reserves were under his command. Like the others, they were trained, equipped with the best gear, and willing to follow orders. Furthermore, they were not confronted with another army of green beasts, so every peak was controlled with ease. Once there, a small group of men were ordered to create a makeshift encampment.

If the four mountains that surrounded their prison were under their control, then it'd be far easier to see an attack before it stabs into them. If one squadron of soldiers were to spot enemies in the distance, they were briefed by Leon to light a stack of lumber on fire. This way, every other peak would be alarmed, including those residing in the prison. Another event where dozens of bandits could hide under their noses would not happen again. Leon would not allow it.

However, even with so many victories now comfortably placed under his belt, Leon found it hard to open the envelope. "Is he angered; I wonder?" Leon whispered to himself, sighing.

A few moments passed, and Leon finally managed to resolve himself. Steeling his nerves, he opened the letter and pulled out the dainty piece of parchment. It still smelled of freshly dabbled ink and scented candles. Unfurling it, Leon began to read.

"Dear Leon, Warden of Bloodmountain, we are pleased by your unrelenting efforts to vanquish the evil consuming the lands of the Empire. Your strength, courage, and honor pleases the court. However, a soldier must never act without orders. A chain of command is set in place for this very reason, so to uphold our way of handling things, we will not award you, in particular, with anything. Danny, a captain, has also fallen while following you. As such, after reviewing all of our documents, we have decided to keep you stationed at Bloodmountain until further notice. Commendations will arrive for your soldiers at another date.
